Editorial Guidelines
The principles that guide every story we publish — so you know exactly what you are reading and where it comes from.
Our editorial approach
The NE Times is an independent commentary and analysis publication. Every article we publish is an original editorial work. Our named editors and correspondents research each story, verify the key facts against multiple reputable outlets, and write independent analysis, commentary and op-eds explaining what each development means for India and our readers — the background, the implications and what to watch next.
The framing, analysis and conclusions in every piece are entirely our own original work. Where our analysis engages with facts that first surfaced elsewhere, we credit and, where appropriate, link to those sources. All content is published for general information purposes and reflects our editorial perspective. Our commentary should not be treated as live news or as professional advice.
Accuracy
We strive to be accurate in all our reporting. We verify information before publication, attribute claims clearly, and distinguish between established fact, allegation and opinion. Where significant facts are disputed, we say so.
Independence
Our journalism is independent. Editorial decisions are made free from the influence of advertisers, commercial partners, owners or political interests. Advertising and sponsored content are always clearly labelled and kept separate from our reporting.
Fairness and balance
We report stories fairly and give those criticised a reasonable opportunity to respond. We seek out a range of perspectives and avoid misleading emphasis or selective quotation.
Comment and opinion
Opinion pieces are clearly marked as such and reflect the views of their authors. We keep a clear line between news reporting and comment.
Sources
We protect confidential sources. Where we rely on anonymous sources, we do so carefully and only when there is a clear public interest and the information is corroborated.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we put it right promptly and transparently through our corrections process.
Respect and privacy
We respect individuals' privacy and report with sensitivity, intruding only where there is a genuine public interest. We take particular care in our coverage of children, grief and vulnerable people.
Images and illustrations
Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all images on this site are generated using AI image tools and are illustrative only. They depict the theme of a story, not the real events, people or places described, and should not be taken as genuine photographs. See our Disclaimer for full details.
